"We are learning to live in the world again," as President Aristide said, reflecting on what might be called the miracle of his presidency, coming as it did after the corrupt, brutal reign of the Duvaliers from 1957 to 1986, and the string of military juntas that convulsed the country until Aristide's election in 1990. ![]() At the time, it seemed that Haiti was on the cusp of a new era. Shakespeare mocks young love as being nothing more than blind lust and causing nothing but trouble. The film is an accurate depiction of two melodramatic kids who love the idea of love rather than truly loving each other (as is often stated by Friar Laurence). This film shows that, so expect the worst kind of behaviour. This is a book about reckless and thoughtless teens with too much time on their hands and too much money in their blood. Memories, inherently flawed, are subjective experiences and are thus authentically truthful. I consulted newspapers, day planners, trial proceedings, journals, letters, and notes I connected with family, friends, and staff I mined my memories, some vivid, others vague, for relevant moments that tell this story as authentically and truthfully as possible. To write this memoir-a journey held within a larger, never-ending story-I relied upon a number of people, documents, and experiences to reconstruct the past and as accurate a timeline as possible. Yeah, I think that might be true, although it would depend on what you call “pornography.” As Jonathan Friedman, director of free expression and education at PEN America, pointed out, Abbott cited a section of Texas Penal Code that deals with the sale or distribution of “harmful material” to minors, which has a very specific legal definition. “The presence of pornography in schools is not only inappropriate, but it is also against the law,” Abbott wrote. ![]() The state agencies said they would comply with his request. In an official communication Abbott called on the Texas Education Agency, the State Board of Education and Texas’s library and archives commission to develop standards to prevent the presence of “pornography and other obscene content” in schools - though he didn’t specify what kind of standards. I should have expected that those politicians demanding the removal from schools of books on “critical race theory” and other titles dealing with race and gender that might cause “discomfort” would inevitably fall back on that old standby of the book banners - the claim that school libraries and classrooms have been flooded with - hold onto your hats - pornography! But there was Texas Governor Greg Abbott this week directing Texas education officials to investigate whether pornography is available in public schools and to notify law enforcement if such material is accessible. ![]() ![]() ![]() Then there's the use of Holmes and Challenger to fill in some backstory from Wells' tome, though within the text Wells' tale is considered a fiction of real events and treated in a slightly derogatory manner. ![]() There is the attempt to make the science of Wells' story more palatable by suggesting the Martians weren't from Mars, because as modern day readers know, there is no life on Mars (or is there?). ![]() ![]() Holmes and Challenger spend a lot of time staring into the Crystal Egg, and running around the countryside in the manner of the narrator of Wells' original tale, but very little is added to make it more flavoursome. What comes out of it is, as another reviewer points out, a pretty uneventful story. The high concept, and possibly one that might have inspired Mr Moore's second LoEG volume, is that Sherlock Holmes is caught up in the War of the Worlds, by way of the "Crystal Egg" from Wells' oeuvre, with aid from Conan Doyle's Professor Challenger. ![]() |
